Artist in Residence

Building Community Through Art, Education, and Healing

The Artists-in-Residence Program at CISE invites creative thinkers—artists, educators, and scholars—to explore how art can advance inclusive, trauma-sensitive education. Rooted in the Center’s vision of compassionate and responsive communities that support and value all learnersCenter for Inclusive & Special …, the residency creates space for dialogue, research, and creative practice that bridges education, healing, and justice.

Each resident contributes an independent or collaborative project that supports the Center’s mission to transform education systems through practical, human-centered, and culturally responsive approaches. Projects may take the form of visual installations, written works, digital media, or community-based initiatives—each reflecting a commitment to equity, belonging, and the power of story.

  • Voices from the Field: Weymouth High School | Path to a Trauma Lens, Cape Elizabeth Schools | Mindfulness in the Classroom, Cape Elizabeth Schools | The Impacts of Workplace Stress on Staff Wellbeing

Featuring presentations conducted by practitioners for practitioners. We will highlight three initiatives implemented by educators intending to develop trauma-sensitive, safe, and supportive environments within their schools. These inquiries help illustrate how essential reflective practice is to trauma-sensitivity.

From Reflection to Research

In their final Action Research Seminar, students collaborate to design and conduct research that explores how trauma-sensitive practices can transform classrooms, schools, and learning communities. Each fall, we highlight selected projects at a community convening, honoring outstanding teams whose work makes a measurable impact. Their stories—shared here—offer insight, inspiration, and practical strategies for educators everywhere.
