The health and well-being of our university community and members of our extended community always come first. In keeping with federal and state health and safety guidelines related to COVID-19, the Institute for Trauma Sensitivity has postponed this event until October 9, 2020. As part of Lesley University’s ongoing commitment to the development of safe and supportive schools, and equity in education, the Lesley Institute for Trauma Sensitivity (LIfTS) conducts two residencies annually, featuring a guest speaker on a topic of trauma and learning, free and open to the public. The October 2020 remote residency speaker is Dr. Nicole Christian-Brathwaite.
We are in the midst of two pandemics: Covid-19 and racism. Racism has always been a pandemic, but it is now receiving national attention. Children of color are disproportionately impacted by both Covid-19 and racism, leading to increased traumatic experiences and negative outcomes for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous People of Color.) Additionally, children of color, particularly Black and Latinx children, are disproportionately targeted for more severe punishments in educational environments. This is yet another trauma for children already at heightened risk for being victims of Adverse Childhood Experiences. We will discuss the disparities that exist in educational environments – secondary to institutional – and individual bias, and ways that these biases can be addressed.
